What is BibGenie?#

BibGenie is an AI research agent designed to integrate directly with Zotero, enhancing your academic workflow. It allows users to bring their entire Zotero workspace, including items, PDFs, notes, and collections, directly into an AI conversation. This eliminates the need to copy research material into separate chatbots, enabling grounded research questions and saving results back as structured Zotero notes. The platform offers robust search capabilities, starting with your Zotero library and extending to OpenAlex for scholarly discovery and web search for public pages when needed. It supports both keyword and semantic search, deep paper reading for extracting specific information, and the ability to synthesize evidence. BibGenie also assists with library organization, using AI to inspect, classify, and manage Zotero items with preview-first workflows for sensitive changes. Users have flexibility in model usage, choosing between BibGenie's recommended official models, connecting their own providers via BYOK, or running models locally with tools like Ollama and LM Studio. This ensures data privacy and control, as custom model requests flow directly from the local Zotero plugin to the configured provider. BibGenie offers a freemium model, providing core Zotero-native AI features for free, with paid plans adding advanced discovery and deep reading capabilities.
